Alice in Tears

My Moleskine Sketchbook Exchange group is in round two of exchanges. Here is my second entry into Carolina Espinosa's book. Her theme is Alice in Wonderland. If you are curious and curiousor,  the previous image from the sketchbook is of the Mad Hatter from Keron Lee. I went with the whole tea party spin off but also combined it with Alice crying, creating her own pool of tears from the beginning of the book.

I used to drown myself in tea so this image came out naturally. I only have one cup of the caffeinated stuff a day, my heart is not sad anymore. My favorite is Earl Grey with a few Jasmine pearls, in a little white teacup.

Interpretation

I'm part of a Moleskine sketchbook exchange. We are in the 2nd round of traveling now. So, this is my 2nd entry into my own sketchbook. I opted for the 2 page Moleskine rather than Japanese accordion because I thought it would be cool.

Yep, that's the reason.

The B.S. Artist's Interpretation: My sketchbooks theme is dreams. Since the beginning of time (and dreams) man has questioned whether one dreams in color or black and white and I, my dear friends, dream in BOTH! In my dreams, I live on a planet of various emotional states; happiness, amazement, and complete and utter terror. While the ground below is emotionally unstable, the sky above is physically unstable, leaving me, the inhabitant, to question the existence of security.

The Honest Artist's Interpretation: I wanted to make mountains with faces and something involving a lightning bolt- something quick and simple because I was behind and needed to mail my sketchbook out fast. I had also gotten a new set of markers and HAD to use them, but didn't want to waste a good portion of ink on coloring in the mountains. So I blocked in color like little rainbow breadcrumbs, but then the mountains needed a little pizazz so in went pencil. Then I titled it "Eat Healthy" thinking that the cloud could be burping the bolt and the other cloud could be letting loose a little rain.

I'm a sucker for a good fart joke.

Sick in the Head

WELL...I've been sick since the 2nd week of February, and it turned into a severe case of pneumonia really quickly. In that time I did absolutely nothing except obsess about the situation and hope that the breakdown would stop soon. Then, once it did, and healing started, I was able to draw. That's pretty much all I have the energy for right now, but a sketchbook and pen are pretty much all I need anyway!

Illness makes me so self obsessed. The Dalai Lama has a meditation called Giving and Receiving. You visualize yourself standing next to a group of people who are experiencing the same pain and suffering situation you are in and you ask yourself who is more important - me or the whole? If possible then, as you breathe in you take in and receive their pain, to relieve the group of all of their suffering, and as you exhale you give them peace.

Thinking about meditating on that makes me feel better already!

By the way, I'm doing very well and healthier each day, thank you!

back to reality

We've come to the end of the road in my postcard themed Art House Co-op Sketchbook Library...sketchbook. You've seen my world, my nightmares, my dreams, and now dear friend, we are back in reality.

 
Sketchbook challenges are the best because I never make my own time to sketchbook, and yet the sketchbook will always [because it continuously has] save my career and sanity.

My book for Art House Co//Op's Sketchbook Library Project is almost done! My theme was postcard. I started my Moleskine off with a journey through my reality. Then we took a sad turn through my nightmares. Now we are at my dreams!

Dreams...things I need more of in my reality so I don't have nightmares. Such as love, healing, reiki, exploration outside of my studio and apartment, and connection.

By the way, according to Jeri Smith-Ready, my spirit animal is a wolf. My reaction to that: "oh HELL YEA!" What's your spirit animal?

I'm part of a Moleskine Sketchbook Exchange [aka Moly X 70]. I made a banner for the blog.

I just finished my entry into Carolina Espinosa's Alice in Wonderland themed sketchbook. I had too many ideas but because the previous entries involved the Rose Garden, I settled on the Queen and King of Hearts. 

The King and Queen are always portrayed old, why not a young pair of royalty, too immature for their crowns? It also confused me in Sir John Tenniel's illustrations as to why the Queen and King were the only exception to not being cards. I like Edmund Dulac's interpretation much better because he combined the inanimate playing card and human qualities.

Hello from your Nightmares!

As I was previously telling you, I signed up for Art House Co//Op's Sketchbook Library Project. My theme was postcard. I started my Moleskine off with a journey through my reality. Now we've arrived at nightmares.  I was really sick, fresh from an E.R. visit when I started these pages. For me, this sketchbook has been an important form of medication for healing. Where antibiotics killed the physical pain, pen and paper killed the emotional torment.

The thing about nightmares are that they are so completely seductive. It's way too easy to be consumed by the fear of the moment than to accept and heal for the long term. Which, in my case, fear killed me in both the short and long term.

That's why I have dreams, which we'll be voyaging through next...

what i wore today

Gemma Correll started a Flickr group for drawings about what you are wearing today. Since I wear the standard freelance uniform of bathrobe and slippers I thought it would be nice to try something new this week ...real clothing daily followed by drawing it!  Some of my favorite illustrators, designers, and artists are sharing. Sooooo....what did you wear today?

My hand is coming back to life.  The first thing it did was play with typography for my moleskine exchange.  It's going to take some time for my hand to be fully restored.  I am forced to slow down and concentrate when making things.  This is good.  Illness will do wonders for your creativity.
